Table tennis is a racket sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth across a table using small paddles. A fast-paced sport requiring lightning reflexes, table tennis is both an Olympic event and a popular recreational activity worldwide.

Origins in England (Late 1800s)

  • Intended as an indoor alternative to lawn tennis

  • Early versions used makeshift equipment:

    • Books as paddles

    • Corks or rubber balls

    • Dining tables as the playing surface

  • Initially known by names like “whiff-whaff”, “gossima”, and “ping-pong” (a name later trademarked by Parker Brothers)

Standardization and Growth

  • By the early 1900s, standardized rules and equipment began to emerge

  • Introduction of the celluloid ball and purpose-made paddles improved consistency

  • The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was established in 1926 to govern international play and unify rules

  • First World Table Tennis Championships also held in 1926

  • Gained popularity across Europe and Asia throughout the 20th century

Olympic Inclusion

  • Table tennis became an official Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Games

  • Events included singles and doubles for both men and women

  • The sport’s inclusion boosted global recognition and funding

  • Since then, countries like China, South Korea, and Germany have dominated international competition

    • China, in particular, has established itself as the leading powerhouse in the sport
